PUBG Mobile is waging war against climate change with the Play for Green campaign that lets players fight on an Erangel map that has been devastated by climate change.
The map was developed by PUBG Mobile studio Lightspeed & Krafton in cooperation with Mark Maslin, a professor at University College London who is the author of books on climate change. Based on Maslin’s work, the PUBG Mobile development team superimposed what the ruins of Erangel would look like in 100 years from now if no change of the current rate of climate change is going to be made. That translated into Erangel becoming an apocalyptic hellscape, the setting of which is characterized by sandstorms, and drought with scarce vegetation.
Step into the Ruins of Erangel WOW map series to see the effects of climate change if we don’t take action.

Where the climate has claimed the Ruins of Erangel, those who like to do it independently will find two modes here. One, Ruins of Erangel: Thus, Sandstorm is what native PUBG players are familiar with the type of battle royale where the players are constantly in danger not only from the opponents but even from the sandstorm. Ruins of Erangel: Exploration is a narrative that poses the consequences of climate change to the players, up to the map and its environment.
And this is in coordination with the newly introduced Run for Green in-game event which will take place on September 11 to 24 only. During that time, totaling 2500000km in total distances traveled by the PUBG Mobile community within the game the progress will be transferred More Tables will progress to milestones that will financially support conservationist efforts meant for ecology which is sometimes referred to as natural environment in Brazil, Indonesia, and Pakistan. In this mode, players will also get their customized items in the game, and in the Home mode, there will be gardens where endangered trees and plants can be planted after the completion of the Run for Green campaign.
For the game’s creatively styled World of Wonder, Endangered California Redwood and Giant Baobab trees are also being added into the mix as well. Players with the creativity to design other different landscape versions of the climate change-affected Ruins of Erangel map using the new items will have their works subject to the verdict of the PUBG Mobile team to earn a share of $12,500. If players play the official new Play for Green map or any maps created by other players 10 million times all together, then PUBG Mobile team will double the amount they contribute to the selected environmental projects in their campaign.
The happening falls under a campaign known as Playing for the Planet which is the formation of game makers that is committed to helping the gaming industry to lessen the adverse effects that it has on the natural environment and is endorsed by the United Nations Environment Programme. As for both Xbox and Sony, both of them are members of the initiative and Xbox experimented with creating carbon-neutral consoles. According to a global survey of PUBG: Mobile players at the beginning of this year, of the players who responded 88% expressed their concern for climate change and a higher percentage expressed that they’ve already suffered climate change in their country.
In a press release, Vincent Wang, head of PUBG Mobile Publishing at Tencent Games said that through gaming, people can contribute to mitigating one of the strongest drivers in the world.
The developments such as the Ruins of Erangel maps and Run for Green event is not just a way of providing fun and entertaining contents for the consumers, but a way of provoking the world into being a better place.
