Benchmarked to deliver a compact fully modular ATX 3.0, 20% semi-fanless design.

Acer has just unveiled the Predator GX850, a new retail PC PSU that has entered the market. The first and only member of this foundational line is a fully ATX 3.0 with standard 80 Plus Gold unit rated at 850W. It is intended on staying true to the SFX form factor while offering 20% semi-fanless and comes with a built-in PCIe 5.1 connector. Prices are similar to Corsair, Cooler Master, and other manufacturers.
The PSU is compliant with the ATX 3.0 and PCIe 5.1 specifications and so it had to come with the 12VHPWR connector for a direct interface with the high power GPUs that support the connection. Competitors such as Corsair are now releasing PSUs that are compatible with ATX 3.1 that directly provide them the revised and safer – but still fully compatible with the older version – 12V-2x6 cable type.

Other appealing features that the Acer Predator GX850 has are that it is fully modular, the way that you connect it is you only use what cables you have to and yes that causes cable mess and restricted airflow. The product also comes with “Japanese Primary 105°C capacities”, that are typical of most reliable PSUs, and are rated the best PSUs.

Acer’s new PSU works in a semi-fanless operational mode. The 90mm fan will not start to spin until the PSU crosses 20% load to provide silent working up to that PSU load level. As for efficiency, it can operate with up to 90 percent efficiency at 50 percent load, according to Acer, thus receiving the 80 Plus Gold certificate.

It is nice to find another contender in the PSU market, however it somehow appears quite saturated nowadays. It’s also important to note that Acer proved it could innovate in the PC components market with the Predator graphics cards within the last couple of years. But there is a probability that this product is just a rebranding of FSP, SeaSonic, SuperFlower, or any other OEM – like many of the modern PSU products.

Finally, we have seen different European stocks for this Acer Predator GX850 SFX PSU. GBP, EURO, and SEK listings and various taxes show that the U. S. retail listing price is around $130 to $140. In my opinion, that sum looks quite reasonable but not especially engaging for a ‘new’ PSU brand which has official listings showing that the warranty is 2 years; that is relatively short.
